SURF DOG LEGENDS

Abbie Girl the Surf Dog

Abbie came to Michael Uy as a shy, traumatized rescue who needed help building confidence — so Michael started taking her to the beach. What began as gentle ocean therapy for an Australian Kelpie turned into one of the greatest athletic feats in the sport's history. In 2011, at the Surf City Surf Dog event, Abbie set a Guinness World Record for the longest wave ever surfed by a dog solo — then broke her own record months later, riding a wave 351.7 feet down the coast at Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego. It still stands.
On land, she's just as fearless: she's even gone skydiving. Abbie is the reminder every rescue dog deserves: you never know what they're capable of until you paddle out together.

“Abbie transformed my life. She gave me a deeper purpose and that true pet companionship is about helping an animal reach their potential while simply having fun together. Surfing began organically when Abbie wanted to stay close to me in the ocean; as her trust grew and she followed me out into deeper water, I used my surfboard to let her rest—leading to her surprising me by standing up on the board and catching the wave.”
