Joey didn't take lessons to become a surf dog — he wandered onto a stranger's board on Huntington Beach and decided the sport was his. Rescued from a high-kill shelter by Westie Rescue of Orange County & Beyond, Joey found his way to Kay DeLoach and, one day at the beach, hopped on a surfer's board, rode it to shore, and calmly stepped off like he'd done it a thousand times. His family knew right then: this was his sport. Since then, Joey has become one of Huntington Beach's most photographed competitors at the Surf City Surf Dog event and the official logo dog for WROC, with features in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the West Highland Terrier Club of America's Rescue Magazine. When he's not surfing, he visits schools to teach kids about caring for rescue pets. Small dog, big wave, bigger personality: Joey is proof that sometimes the sport chooses you.
