SURF DOG LEGENDS
Kihei the Surf Dog
Kihei was a small rescue — part dachshund, part terrier, part chihuahua — who came home with Tina Musto from the coastal town of Kihei on Maui, and carried its name ever after. Years later, he'd become the reason Tina met Jill Nakano, the two bonding over their shared love of the water. Jill taught Kihei to surf, and went on to win regional titles and became a celebrated icon in California canine surfing, competing in events including the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge, Surf City Surf Dog, before retiring in 2016. Kihei was a beloved fixture of California's dog surfing scene — proof that the biggest personalities often come in the smallest packages.
“You can’t buy love, but you can rescue it. It’s rewarding beyond words to rescue a dog from the shelter and have that dog become part of your family. It all began with Kihei. He will always be a living legend in my heart”
