Petey is a West Highland White Terrier (Westie) from Huntington Beach, California, with a whole lot of confidence packed into a small frame. His owner and trainer, Kay DeLoach, saw it early and introduced him to a surfboard before his first birthday. Petey took to it right away. He developed an incredible sense of balance and an innate knack for adjusting his stance to handle unpredictable whitewater. Before long, the pup who started out practicing in the backyard was ready for the real thing. In 2021, Petey entered the Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon in Del Mar as a first-time, underdog competitor. In the extra-small category, he glided past seasoned canine veterans and took home the “Top Dog” grand prize. Petey’s carefree, beach-loving charisma is the first thing people notice, but it’s not the whole story. He’s also a philanthropy ambassador, and every wave he rides supports Westie Rescue of Orange County & Beyond (WROC). His ocean heats raise funds to cover medical expenses for senior dogs and “forever fosters,” the dogs who need a little extra care for the long haul. Over his surfing career, Petey has raised more than $21,000 for the rescue community, proving that a small dog can make a huge impact.
