SURF DOG LEGENDS

Surf Dog Ricochet

Ricochet washed out of service dog school for the same reason she became a legend: she couldn't stop chasing the water. The canine's mission became clear in 2009, when she got on a surfboard with quadriplegic surfer Patrick Ivison. What started as balance training in a kiddie pool turned into a career as one of the original dogs of the dog surfing circuit — and then into something bigger. As a self-titled "SURFice dog," Ricochet surfed alongside children with disabilities, wounded veterans, and anyone who needed a reason to get back in the water, raising over a million dollars for causes along the way. The 15-year-old canine helped countless veterans and kids during more than a decade providing therapy in the waves off San Diego. Ricochet and her human, Judy Fridono passed in 2023, but thier story — and the surf therapy movement they helped start — lives on.

“Soon after she started surfing, Ricochet started doing something more meaningful with her talent. She began to accompany children with disabilities for surf therapy, and we have used her profile to fundraise for them, working first with Patrick, a 14-year-old quadriplegic boy. Patrick enjoyed the independence and Ricochet was joyful when they shared a board.”
