Healthy Treats, Happy Tails: 3 Easy Recipes Your Dog Will Beg For
After a morning of paddling out, catching waves, and shaking salt water all over everyone in a five-foot radius, your surf dog has earned a reward. And while store-bought treats are fine in a pinch, there's something special about handing your pup a snack you made yourself — one you know is made with real, simple ingredients and a whole lot of love.
These three recipes are easy enough to whip up the night before a beach day, use ingredients you probably already have on hand, and are gentle on sensitive stomachs (always a plus before a day of activity). As always, check with your vet before introducing new foods, especially if your dog has allergies or a sensitive tummy.
1. Pupsicles: The Ultimate Post-Surf Cooldown
Nothing beats the heat — or a hard training session — like a frozen treat. These are less a "recipe" and more a trick, but your dog will think you're a genius.
You'll need:
1 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt (dog-safe, no xylitol)
1/2 cup mashed banana or pumpkin puree
A splash of water to thin, if needed
Silicone mold or ice cube tray
How to make it: Mix the yogurt and banana or pumpkin together until smooth. Spoon into the mold, freeze for at least four hours, and pop one out after a beach session for an instant, mess-friendly cooldown. Bonus: the yogurt's probiotics are gentle on digestion, which is handy after a day of drinking a little too much ocean water.
2. Peanut Butter & Oat Training Bites
Small, soft, and easy to carry in a pocket or treat pouch, these are perfect for rewarding good behavior at the beach — like calmly waiting for their turn on the board.
You'll need:
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free — always double-check the label)
1 mashed ripe banana
1 egg
How to make it: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Mix all ingredients into a thick dough, roll into small, bite-sized balls, and flatten slightly on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 12–15 minutes until firm, then let cool completely before serving. Store in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze a batch for later.
3. Salmon & Sweet Potato Bites (A Coastal Dog's Favorite)
For the surf dog who's earned something a little more special after a big competition day, this one brings in some ocean-inspired flavor and a boost of omega-3s for a shiny coat and healthy joints.
You'll need:
1 cooked sweet potato, mashed
1 can (about 5 oz) boneless, skinless salmon, drained
1 egg
1 cup oat flour (or blended rolled oats)
How to make it: Preheat your oven to 325°F. Combine all ingredients into a dough, roll out to about 1/4-inch thickness, and cut into small shapes with a cookie cutter (bone-shaped optional, but fun). Bake for 20 minutes, flipping halfway, until firm. Cool fully before serving, and store in the fridge for up to five days.
A Little Treat, A Lot of Love
Making your dog's treats by hand is its own small act of care — one more way of showing up for the partner who shows up for you every time you paddle out together. Keep a batch in the cooler for your next beach day, and watch your pup's tail do all the talking.
