The record-breaking surf dog from Japan Coda was an English Cocker Spaniel from Japan with a rare range of talents: surfing, skateboarding, and breaking world records. His owner and positive-reinforcement trainer, Satomi Asano, guided him every step of the way. Coda learned to surf young, riding waves in places like Kanazawa in a custom wetsuit and life vest. Satomi built his surfing around trust and comfort on the board rather than force, and it showed. He looked like a dog who simply loved being out there. His talents didn’t stop at the shoreline. Coda set a Guinness World Record for the longest human tunnel travelled through by a dog on a skateboard, rolling smoothly under the legs of 40 people. He set the record in Milan, Italy, while quietly dealing with a cancer diagnosis he’d received in 2024. After recovering from surgery, Coda made one last big journey with Satomi. In August 2024, they traveled to California to compete at the World Dog Surfing Championships near San Francisco, and Coda came home with a medal. Coda changed the course of Satomi’s life, too. She became a dog trainer because of him, and she now runs Skye Labo in Japan, a specialized positive-reinforcement canine academy focused on force-free training and behavioral development. She used Coda’s story to encourage owners to build bonds through kindness and trust instead of punishment. Coda passed away peacefully at home in Japan on September 9, 2025, at 13 years and 10 months old. He left behind a record, a medal, and a lesson about what a dog can do when the bond comes first, and Satomi carries that lesson forward every day at Skye Labo.
